Christening Venue in Herefordshire
Lyde Court is a 17th-century stone barn on the Duchy of Cornwall Estate, two miles from Hereford city centre, available for hire throughout the year. It is a family-friendly venue — outdoor grounds where children can run, a relaxed atmosphere that does not feel corporate, and a setting that photographs beautifully without needing additional decoration.
We host both christening receptions (following a church service at a local church) and naming ceremonies held entirely at Lyde Court. Whether you are planning an intimate afternoon for thirty family members or a larger gathering, the barn and gardens are yours exclusively for the event.

Christening Receptions
If you are planning a church christening in Hereford or the surrounding area, Lyde Court works well as the reception venue afterwards.
We are two miles from Hereford city centre — close enough for guests to reach easily, far enough to feel like a genuine countryside escape.
With exclusive use, the barn, gardens and bar are entirely yours for the day. Most christening receptions here run from early afternoon through to early evening — though there is no curfew if the celebration extends naturally into the night.
What does a christening reception day look like?
Guests typically arrive from midday. The barn is decorated with candles and fairy lights as standard. Food is served in mid-afternoon — usually afternoon tea, a buffet spread or a hog roast for summer celebrations. The bar is open throughout and staffed by our own team. The afternoon continues at whatever pace suits your group.
Naming Ceremonies
A naming ceremony is a non-religious celebration marking a child’s arrival and introduction to family and friends. Unlike a christening, there is no requirement for a church service beforehand — the ceremony itself can take place at Lyde Court, in the barn or in the gardens, led by a celebrant of your choice.
We can suggest independent celebrants who have worked with us previously if you do not already have one in mind. The barn’s garden spaces — the Front Lawn, Rose Barn and courtyard — all make beautiful locations for an outdoor or semi-outdoor naming ceremony, followed by a reception inside the barn.
A Genuinely Family-Friendly Setting
Christenings involve guests of all ages and typically include several babies, toddlers and young children. Lyde Court is set up to handle this comfortably.
Outdoor space
The Front Lawn, Willow Lawn and courtyard give children room to run, explore and be children during what is often a long afternoon for them.
Pushchairs and accessibility
There is ample free parking directly adjacent to the barn. Accessible parking bays are available close to the main entrance. The barn and outdoor areas are level and easy to navigate with a pram. A step-free entrance is available at the back of the barn on the north wall.
Children and the bar
Children are welcome throughout the venue during private hire events. The bar operates alongside the event.
Food and Drink for Christening Celebrations
All food at Lyde Court is prepared in-house using locally sourced Herefordshire ingredients. Every menu is discussed and tailored to your event — there are no fixed christening packages. The most popular options for christening receptions are:
Afternoon Tea
The classic format for a christening reception. Finger sandwiches, seasonal cakes, scones and pastries served at dressed tables in the barn. Works well for celebrations of any size from 20 to 100 guests. We can accommodate a christening cake alongside the afternoon tea spread.
Buffet and grazing
A relaxed option that suits longer celebrations or groups with a wide age range — easy for guests to graze at their own pace while children are occupied. Can include sandwich platters, salads, hot dishes and a dessert table.
Summer BBQ or hog roast
For summer christenings, an outdoor barbecue or Herefordshire hog roast on the lawn is a popular and memorable option. Works particularly well when the celebration extends into the late afternoon or early evening.
The Bar
We are a free house — a genuine selection of local ales, Herefordshire ciders, wines and soft drinks. No minimum spend. Soft drinks, juice and squash are always available for children and drivers. We can arrange a welcome drink for guests on arrival if required.
Accommodation for Guests
For families with guests travelling from further afield — grandparents, godparents, relatives from outside Herefordshire — on-site accommodation removes the logistics of hotel coordination. Guests who stay over can be there for the whole day without worrying about driving home at a fixed time.
The Oast House accommodates guests in family rooms and dormitories — up to 66 guests on site across all accommodation. The Bridal Suite and three VIP en-suite double rooms are also available. Guests who stay over can have breakfast the following morning in the barn.
